The Second Picture at Discovery Park South Bluff

I’ve heard photographers say “Take the picture and then turn around and take the picture behind you.”

Here is a perfect example. I went to the south bluff at Discovery Park get photos of the sunset. As I walked  from the car toward the bluff, laden like a pack mule, I looked up and saw gold. Golden grass, illuminated by a golden sunset. Fingers crossed, I set up my tripod. Light changes so fast that I didn’t even change out the lens. I just started working the shot.

So here it is, my second picture.

Overdoing it at Wallace Falls

View of Middle FallsMiddle Falls at Wallace Falls State Park

“Hey Everybody, Come join me on a hike up Wallace Falls!” That was how it started, a friendly invitation to my SigO from an old friend.

It struck me that the Wallace Falls trail would be an opportunity to train for elevation gain, preparation I would need for the Camino hike. A decade ago I had climbed the path from bottom to top quite often. I recalled having been in good shape at the time, but since we’d been training consistently for three months, I thought we were reasonably well prepared. Besides, sooner or later I would need to take on real world elevation gain.

Just for the record, my one hour treadmill workouts reach up to 15% grade. They have become incrementally difficult as I have started the VO2 – VCO2 workout. The rewards have been tangible and perhaps more so, reassuring. The weight loss was progressing and I was getting stronger and more fit for the walk.
It is essential to find a solution to this dysfunction and that was when buy sildenafil canada jelly was found. The experiment proved successful and the manufacturer found a india levitra big market for its medicine. So, cheap sildenafil is also a cheap medicine for erectile dysfunction does not work for everyone. Mild side effects are seen in cheapest viagra online amerikabulteni.com the case of this drug.
Treadmills are not hiking trails. I’d recognized the difference during previous hiking binges. The climb up the trail to Wallace Falls was confirmation and reminder of this observation. It should be noted that we made it to the Middle Falls. The Upper Falls will have to wait for the next time out.

I can’t begin to put into words the tiredness of the body and overall achiness resulting from that hike. Even as I lay in bed in the evening, my legs and feet throbbed. The pulsing moving randomly from one to foot to another and then a calf or thigh and back around. No part was spared from protest of overexertion. In an act of desperation, I took aspirin at bedtime and again at 3 AM. Finally at 5:30 AM, awakened by my SigO who wanted me to rub his back, I recommended 600 mg Advil. We each took one and finally fell into restful sleep.

As I sit here having just taken another Advil, I recognize two things. The journey begins when you decide to make it. I have a long way to go before I get to St John Pied de Port but I can walk around the world if I take one step after another.

Physical Training for the Camino de Santiago

According to the Brierley guidebook, most of the pilgrimage ending injuries occur because pilgrims did not train for the walk. In addition, carrying a 28 lb backpack and 28 lbs of extra body weight often results in cracks in the bones.

For two years I talked about training. I even delayed my trip for a year because I had not trained. One day my son, who was taking a class in change managment introduced me to MyFitnessPal. It was a revelation. I faced the truth. I was slowly gaining weight rather than maintaining. I ate very little, but the food was high in calories. I was not training for the walk. Instead I found excuses like “I am waiting for warmer weather,” or “The jacuzzi is too cold to help with the soreness.”

The day I kept a food and exercise diary was the day I faced the truth. The only thing that would prepare me for the rigors of the Way was to make diet and exercise a habit. I had to track my food consumption so that I could lose the required body weight. I had to have an exercise routine with a gradual increase in difficulty. With those two things I would be better prepared for the physical demands of the pilgrimage.

A Walk in the Park

I’m tired and dehydrated and my feet hurt. What a GREAT day!!! Yesterday Steve and I walked around Green Lake Park carrying packs. It was a clear sunny (insert beautiful here) day of about 70 degrees with a cool breeze. As planned, we walked with a friend so it was a leisurely trip around the lake while we chatted and caught up on the latest.

From a training perspective, this trip was different. The path was flat with gravel next to asphalt. We were walking at a slower pace than usual because it was a social occasion. It was also my third day carrying a heavier pack.

My back was already sore from the previous two days of my training for the Camino. I wasn’t sure about carrying a pack, but because our bottled water was most easily carried that way, I decided to take it.

As for dehydration, the gentle breeze on a sunny day is a dry breeze. By the end of a day outdoors dehydration is typical. In addition, sipping water required pulling the bottles, which had been placed at the bottom out of backpacks while we were standing. Swearing that the water was indeed in the designated pocket, we tended to want to swear at the person attempting to reach down in the backpack. “It’s in there. Just feel around. It’s there.” We didn’t stop for water very often.

This morning I looked for hydration reservoirs. Apparently this is backpacker talk for packable water carriers you can drink from with a tube while you walk. After some thought, I can probably carry 2 liters or about 4.5 lbs. I want my back to be insulated from the water. Those things decided, the first item on my new REI wishlist is a Platypus Big Zip LP Reservoir – 2 Liter size.

The next bit of wisdom regarding hydration was something I learned from another hiker. A plastic bag of orange slices is a great way to hydrate. Sucking out the juice from the orange wedge quenches thirst and replenishes electrolytes, but you don’t drink so much that the next stop necessary is a rest room. At the end of our walk we found a shady bench and ate orange wedges while we recovered.

I am physically tired often these days. My workouts challenge me. I’ve heard people say that working out doesn’t make you tired. I challenge that wisdom with physical evidence of fatigue on the day following a long or very intensive workout. That doesn’t mean I will stop. In fact as I get stronger, it takes more to tire me out. I’ll just keep working toward my goals and let my body feel the way it feels on any given day.

And then there are the feet. I am wearing Keds that are actually a bit too wide for me. It’s time to get more serious about footwear, but hot tired sore feet seem to come with the package. Occasional foot soaks and a stiff upper lip seem to be sufficient to get through at least for the typical 3 mile workout I am doing now.

Camino de Santiago costs

Preparing for the cost of the Camino de Santiago walk is an important part of a pilgrimage. The standard wisdom is that the pilgrimage costs very little because low cost meals and lodging are available for bonafide pilgrims.

“Very little” is relative. What is the cost of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage?

Here is a planning tool that helps calculate the cost of a pilgrimage on the Camino Frances.

Camino de Santiago pilgrimage Cost Calculator

I have been in complete denial about the real cost of the pilgrimage. I am comfortable staying in hostels. The pilgrim meals are part of the experience. Wouldn’t the real costs be in equipping for the walk and traveling to and from the Camino?
These are online viagra prescription available in different doses- 25, 50, 100 mg doses. The calculator forced me to face the costs of this trip. I plan to stay for at least 45 days because I want to spend time studying the castles and cathedrals along the way. I might even take some side trips to older historical sites and museums.

The cost of my pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago is about $15 per day or $1170. That is in addition to equipment, airfare and train or bus from Paris or Barcelona to St. Jean de Pied de Port.

I had faced the reality of physical fitness a few months before.
